I have the exact problem and it used to drive me crazy.
As I have spent all night straightening and blowdrying it.
I try not to use too many products as it ruins the style.
My secret is to use a 8 – 10 drops of Mark Hill de humidifying shine serum (Pink Bottle) from boots currently priced at 5.99.
I apply the serum straight after I have washed and conditioned it, leave it for 10 minutes, blowdry, apply serum again and then straighten with the good old and fantastic GHD's as these retain the smoothness and silkiness.

Like one of the other answers said, it would help to know what the countertop is made of. Also, if your curling iron did it, it's likely a burn or heat discoloration, which is very hard if not impossible to get rid of without replacement.
